Supporting You Through The Fertility Journey
Infertility is a challenge that many couples face. While the causes of infertility are overwhelmingly physiological, the resulting heartache — often exacerbated by the physical and emotional rigours of infertility treatment — may exact a huge psychological toll. We recognise how important it is to have professional, efficient and compassionate care throughout this challenging journey. We aim to make the process as easy to understand and follow as possible.
Dr Mooring can assist with many different treatment styles including:
IVF
In vitro fertilisation, also called IVF, is a complex series of procedures that can lead to a pregnancy. It's a treatment for infertility, a condition in which you can't get pregnant after at least a year of trying for most couples. IVF also can be used to prevent passing on genetic problems to a child.
During in vitro fertilisation, mature eggs are collected from ovaries and fertilised by sperm in a lab. Then a procedure is done to place one or more of the fertilised eggs, called embryos, in a uterus, which is where babies develop. One full cycle of IVF takes about 2 to 3 weeks. Sometimes these steps are split into different parts and the process can take longer.
In vitro fertilisation is the most effective type of fertility treatment that involves the handling of eggs or embryos and sperm. Together, this group of treatments is called assisted reproductive technology.
IVF can be done using a couple's own eggs and sperm. Or it may involve eggs, sperm or embryos from a known or unknown donor. In some cases, a gestational carrier — someone who has an embryo implanted in the uterus — might be used.
IUI
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure that treats infertility. IUI boosts the chances of pregnancy by placing specially prepared sperm directly in the uterus, the organ in which a baby develops. Another name for the procedure is artificial insemination.
With IUI, the sperm are inserted around the time an ovary releases one or more eggs. The desired outcome is for the sperm and egg to unite in the fallopian tube, which connects the uterus to the ovaries. If this happens, it leads to pregnancy.
Intrauterine insemination can be timed with a person's menstrual cycle. During the monthly cycle, one of the two ovaries releases an egg. Or fertility medicines may be used along with IUI to help the ovaries produce eggs. The exact method used depends on the reasons for infertility.
OVULATION INDUCTION
Ovulation induction uses hormonal therapy to stimulate egg development and release, or ovulation. Historically, these drugs were designed to induce ovulation in women who did not ovulate on their own — typically women with irregular menstrual cycles. The goal is to produce a single, healthy egg.
The second use of ovulation induction is to increase the number of eggs reaching maturity in a single cycle, to increase chances for conception.
